What is mafia?

A: Mafia is a game that can be played in a group or online in which a group of townsfolk (the good guys) try to discover and root out the Mafia and any other threats that may be hiding amongst them.
Q: How is Mafia played?
A: A game of Mafia alternates between day and night cycles. During the day the town (along with the Mafia pretending to be townspeople) vote by majority to lynch someone, hoping to kill the Mafia members in this fashion. During the night discussion is halted and the Mafia choose someone to kill. After this the next day begins and the game continues until either the Mafia have control of the town or the townspeople have killed every Mafia member. It is not advised to sign up for this game unless you are willing to stick around for about three weeks or so and post at least once a day.
Story
In the year 2012, the Bacon Wars have taken over the world. It all started with a political debate on TV that turned uglier than usual. The question was asked: Is bacon better crispy or chewy? From there all out civil war was waged, and communities around the world were divided on the issue. However, one town, Whopperville, decided to settle the issue forever, by banning bacon within the town limits. The town was restored to peace, for now, but there is talk that bacon smuggling is happening from the nearby Big Mac City. Now, the town is under threat from two organized groups: the Crisp Cut Crunchers and the Bendy Bacon Brothers. Will the town of Whopperville succeed in weeding out these ruffians? Or will the question finally be answered over which bacon reigns supreme?
Rules
1. NO EDITING. This is like the 10th mafia game, and there hasn't been much of a problem, but let's keep it like that, okay?
2. ABSOLUTELY NO NIGHT POSTS. You see what the topic title says? If it says night, don't post. The only exception to this rule is dead posts and if the game has been unresponsive for more than 72 hours. However, if this is the case, only one post. Don't have a conversation.
3. ONE POST AFTER DEATH. And whatever you do, don't make it about the game or any member.
4. IF YOU'RE NOT A PLAYER, NO INFLUENCING THE GAME. You may post in the game (as long as you don't abuse it), but you may not give advice to players. No saying "X is suspicious" or anything of the sort. Let the players figure stuff out on their own.
5. BE GOOD SPORTS. This is only a game. If someone is trying to kill you, don't be a baby about it. If anything, that'll only make you die faster. If anyone is found to be antagonizing anyone else, they will be kicked from the game and will be subject to the forum rules by the proletariats. Also, if drama DOES occur, don't encourage it. Report the posts and let me know in PM's if I'm not available.
6. IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS ABOUT THE GAME, RULES, ROLES, PLAYERS, ETC., BRING THEM TO ME IN PRIVATE. I won't bite.
7. SUICIDE IS NOT PERMITTED, EVEN AS A STRATEGY. Killing yourself isn't going to accomplish anything, and it can be a bit scummy to use to win town favor. Killing yourself by purposefully breaking the rules will result in exclusion from future games.
8. BE ACTIVE. The game will likely have down times. It'll happen. However, if you're online, please try to contribute. This especially goes for mafia members. If you have the time to screw around in the mafia meeting, you can post in the thread (within reason, avoid double posting).
9. NO META. Don't bring up anything considered meta. Did someone say in Unimportant that they're going to be gone for 3 days? Don't bring it up. Don't bring up that they "were online" and could have done something. About as meta as you can get is "Why didn't you mention this before in another post?". Adding to this, no discussion of "last/past game(s)". Not even in mafia discussion. Last game is last game is last game is last game. If you have to rely on last game to justify your choices this game, be prepared to be disappointed. You will have consequences.
10. KNOW THE RULES. If you have to question whether something is against the rules or not, it's probably something you shouldn't do, at least not before talking to me about it.

ROLES
TOWN:
Vegetarian (1): Vanilla Villager. Every 3 days a random Vegetarian will be promoted secretly to one of the power roles of the Town that got killed (except the PETA activist). If no power roles were killed, no Vegetarians will be promoted.
Tofu Bacon Vegetarian (1): Miller. Will show up guilty when investigated and lynched but is an innocent Vegetarian. Cannot be promoted.
PETA Activist (1): Will throw a bucket of acid at the first visitor that comes to them each night (if multiple visitors come, the first one will be attacked, the others will be able to carry out their jobs). Has a 50% chance of killing the visitor. At the very least their night action will be nullified.
Vigilante (1): The vigilante can tie up one person each night. Anyone attempting to visit the person they have captive will fail. Even Mafia. Has a 50% chance of finding something on the person that indicates their innocence/guilt.
Humanitarian (1): Care for everyone's safety. A Humanitarian will guard one person per night. If a Mafia member visits that person, the Humanitarian will take the bullet. Because of their good karma, they will have a 50% chance to survive the attack. However, they may protect Mafia members inadvertently. The Humanitarian can't be killed by the PETA Activist.
Conspiracy Theorist (1): The conspiracy theorist is worried about their survival. They have a storeroom where they can seal themselves off entirely for 36 hours (a night, a day, and a night). They may bring another person into the storeroom, but if the person they bring is a mafia member, they will die. (the mafia member will be cut off from the other mafia and the town for the 36 hours). The humanitarian may sneak in too.
MAFIAS: (each mafia will have all of these roles)
Chocolate-Covered Bacon (1): Will show up innocent when investigated. They lead the mafia and have the final say in all activities. They cannot go out at night to do mafia tasks unless they are the last member of the mafia.
Bacon Mafia (2): Will show up Crispy or Chewy when investigated, depending on mafia. They carry out the mafia's tasks at night. One mafia member may be chosen to kill at night, and another may be the hooker, provided they have a pair of panties (each group gets 1 pair of panties to share). If the last person that was hooker is killed at night or lynched during the day, the panties will be lost.
THIRD PARTY:
The BLT: An investigative trio out to seek out the mafia. Have their own headquarters to discuss matters. They have 3 interchangeable roles, each one more suited to one of them. All discussions will be done anonymously with false names. The 3 things they can do are: Investigate (follow the person around unseen. Not considered "visiting" that person), Interrogate (Lock someone up for the night and question them. Has a chance of uncovering their role), and Anonymous Messages (can send a message to someone anonymously). The group may opt to use up to 2 of any power at night (meaning 2 people sending messages, 2 people investigating, or 2 people interrogating), but they can't use that power twice the next night. Will never be able to investigate or interrogate each other properly.
Lettuce (1): Great at investigations (will always see where they're going and has a chance of uncovering their role (Except a Chocolate-Covered Bacon)), bad at sending anonymous messages (can be revealed to be Lettuce to the person they sent it to).
Tomato (1): Great at interrogations (Will always reveal the role of the person they're interrogating (except for a Chocolate-Covered Bacon)), bad at investigating (can be distracted easily).
Kevin Bacon (1): The traitor of the group. Totally concerned with bringing bacon back and reigning king of the town. Only wins if they survive, and one of the mafia groups wins. Great at sending anonymous messages (will never be revealed), bad at interrogations (May forget to use the 2-way glass and reveal themselves to the person they're investigating. Kevin Bacon will be able to send a message to the Chocolate-Covered Mafia once a night.
